Pouding Fufu

Joey and Emily took these pictures of Master Fufu (Nana Kwame)and Gloria (the Abu's granddaughter) making fufu.
We came up with the name of Master Fufu for Nana Kwame because he is always the one who is pounding the fufu and at first it was hard for us to understand his name - so we made up our own. He is now known by that for us, and answers to it very enthusiastically.

Anyway, So the fufu is made by putting boiled plantains and casaba in the wooden bowl. The guy with the fufu mallet pounds as the person sitting there (Gloria in this case) moves it all around so that everything gets pounded.

It's quite the art really. It's important to get the rhythm down perfectly, otherwise someone's hand is going to get smashed - and that wouldn't be fun.

I find it all so interesting that by just pounding the casaba and plantains it creates such a doughy substance. I decided I'm going to have to try it with potatoes when we get home to see if any starchy food will do the same thing.

But what I find even more interesting than that, is that the Ghanaians literally eat fufu 4 or 5 times a week. I would get sick of something if I ate it that often - but they love it!

Maybe sometime soon Spencer and I will try pounding the fufu - they'll probably laugh at us, but it would still be fun.
