Trip Home From Accra Temple

After everyone got done at the temple, President Twum, (the branch president who had finally arrived)had brought lunch for all of us prepared by his wonderful wife. We were able to go up to the Ancillary Housing and have our meal in the communal kitchen. It was so great and so wonderful to get some good food! Then it was back into the tro tro to head on home!

Here's how everyone was crammed into the back of the van - what good sports!

Because Spencer has "long legs", or in other words, he's the tallest of everyone basically where ever we go here, we got to sit in the front. Never have I been so grateful to have married a tall man :) Although the radiator under my seat about cooked me to death I knew it was a blessing to get to sit in the front and definitely couldn't complain.

Another blessing of getting to sit in the front was getting to take all the pictures I'd been wanting to take since our first ride out of Accra. Most of these are things I just think are cool and want to remember.
Like the streets lined with people selling their stuff

I find it very facinating that they are constructing overpasses and paved roads for people to drive on and some of them look like they could actually be used... but we still drive on the dirt to the side of these roads.

These half-done overpasses also have become major congregations of peddlers

No one uses lanes or stays on the right side of the road - it's more of a first-come first-serve basis type of driving - especially when dodging the pot-holes. This picture kind of illustrates that with us going one direction, the people on either side of us going the other and the car on the far right going our same way. It gets a little nerve-wracking sometimes having to watch this kind of driving - but nothing too bad has happened yet.

The countryside is gorgeous though! Despite all the awful pollution in the air, I find much joy in seeing the rolling hills and mountains covered in gorgeous greenery. I can't get enough of it!

Every gas station we’ve ever stopped at just makes me laugh – they’re so rundown, but definitely still functioning. So I had to take a picture of this one to document it.
Something cool about these gas stations that I’ve never seen anywhere else, right at the pump it asks you exactly how much you want to spend. Once you put in the amount you can start pumping and when the amount of gas matches your price it stops. It’s wonderful! Right at the pump! I think it’s cool :)

I love the overpass markets!

I especially love the hoards of people that surround the government busses when they pass by.

More of the overpass markets

More countryside!

Here’s a lady trying to reach up to someone in the bus window – it’s quite far up, and I find it fascinating that they can exchange goods and money in such a quick stop.

One of the towns outside of Accra that we drove through

This tipped truck was NOT there when we drove in. It did not look like fun!

More of that same village. I love the big mountain in the background. It’s gorgeous!

We finally made it home about 4 hours after we left. Traffic always seems to make the ride home longer than the ride there. But we made it home just in time for the 3rd/4th place match in the world cup. So happy Germany won! I’m still bitter about Uruguay’s win over Ghana :)

  1. Again I love reading your blog. It is so fun to follow. Thanks for looking at ours. We are not as exciting, nor update it as often. Which has been the case after coming home from India. But I'm asking the same question Chris is asking? Do you have something to tell us when you get home!!! My brother and sister in law brought back the most adorable hand made mobile from Ghana. It was my inspiration on what color I wanted to do the dresser. Again, love and safety from us here in Utah!
